Quick answer

On the calculator's default inputs — a $29.99 product with $6.50 COGS, $3.00 shipping, $1.00 inbound freight, 10% ad spend and a 5% return rate — a 20% target margin leaves room for a maximum creator commission of about 12.7%, just under the ~13% third-party US average. TikTok's official range runs from 1% to 80%, so the constraint is almost never the platform — it is your own unit economics. The $20 product worked example shows the same math at a price point where the ceiling sits near zero.

How the reverse calculation works

Every other calculator on this site runs forwards: here is a rate, here is what it leaves you. This one runs the other way, and the algebra is exact — not an approximation.

[ 01 ]

Fix every cost except the commission

floor = revenue − referral − FBT − COGS − shipping − inbound − storage − ads − sample amortization − return costs

This floor is what the product earns per unit before paying a single dollar of creator commission. It is exactly the Profit Calculator's effective profit at a 0% rate.

[ 02 ]

Solve for the rate

max rate = (floor − target profit) ÷ item price

Creator commission is a percentage of the item price, so the equation is linear and the answer is exact. Set the target to $0 and you get the break-even rate — the point where the product stops paying you anything.

[ 03 ]

Two different fee bases

TikTok's referral fee applies to the buyer's total payment (item price plus shipping the buyer pays); creator commission here applies to the item price. On a $29.99 item, 6% referral ($1.80) and 6% creator ($1.80) happen to match — but add $5 of buyer-paid shipping and the referral grows while the creator rate does not.

The official range vs what sellers actually pay

TikTok's Ads help center states the rule in one sentence: “You can set a commission rate from 1% and 80%.” It also confirms that a Targeted rate overrides the Open rate on the same product. That is the entire official guidance on numbers — TikTok publishes no average, no recommended rate, and no category table.

Treat any precise average you see — ours included — as a benchmark, not a rule. The rate that matters is the one your own unit economics produce above. The full breakdown of plan mechanics, clawbacks and rate strategy is in the affiliate program guide.

Reading your result

[ 01 ]

Below ~5%

The product barely funds a creator program. Either fix the unit economics first (COGS, FBT tier, returns) or run the plan on a small share of catalog SKUs where margins are deeper.

[ 02 ]

5–13%

Affordable but below the third-party US average — expect thinner creator pickup than competitors paying 15%+. Targeted collaborations with specific creators matter more than the open-plan number here.

[ 03 ]

13–30%

Competitive territory. You can match or beat the market average on the open plan and still keep your target margin. Watch the blended rate: if only some orders carry commission, your average cost is lower than the headline rate.

[ 04 ]

Above 30%

Rare — usually deep-COGS or high-ticket products. At these rates the commission line dwarfs every TikTok fee combined, so sample costs and clawback exposure deserve a second look before you publish the plan.

One warning that applies at every level: your blended rate is what matters. If creators drive half your orders, a 20% open-plan rate costs the business an average of 10% per order. The scenario table shows per-creator-order economics; divide by your creator-order share for the blended view.

Frequently asked questions

What creator commission can I afford on TikTok Shop?

With the default inputs — a $29.99 sale price, $6.50 COGS, $3.00 of shipping cost, $1.00 inbound freight, 10% ad spend and a 5% return rate — a 20% target margin leaves a maximum creator commission of about 12.7%. That ceiling sits just under the ~13% third-party US average, and it is a ceiling, not a recommendation: every point above it comes out of your margin.

What commission range does TikTok officially allow?

TikTok's Ads help center documents affiliate commission settings at 1% to 80%, and confirms that a Targeted rate overrides the Open rate on the same product. TikTok publishes no official cross-category average — the ~13% figure quoted elsewhere is a third-party estimate, not an official benchmark.

Is creator commission calculated on the item price or the buyer's total payment?

This calculator charges creator commission on the item price, the same convention as every calculator on this site. TikTok's referral fee is the fee documented against the buyer's total payment (item price plus any shipping the buyer pays). The two fees have different bases, which is why a 20% creator rate costs more in dollars than the 6% referral fee on most orders.

Should I include free samples in my commission math?

Yes, if you ship samples to creators. Ten samples of a $6.50-COGS product is $65 of inventory given away — a real cost that belongs in the per-unit math. The calculator amortizes it as sample count times sample cost divided by monthly units: at 100 units a month, those ten samples add $0.65 to every sale.

Why does my break-even commission differ from another calculator's answer?

Two common reasons. First, many calculators compute the referral fee on the item price only and miss the buyer-paid shipping TikTok includes in its fee base. Second, some quote payment processing as a separate 2.9% plus $0.30 charge — TikTok US retired that structure when the flat 6% rate took effect in April 2024; the 6% already includes processing.
